COLLECT IT
Our wastewater collection system is designed and built to collect and convey wastewater from homes, businesses and industries in all corners of our service area to our Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant in south Madison. Any water that is used for washing, flushing or industrial processing is considered wastewater. Once the water becomes contaminated or is otherwise unfit for human consumption, it is considered wastewater.
TREAT IT
Every hour of every day, wastewater from homes, schools and businesses is conveyed to the District’s Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant in Madison. The plant uses a combination of physical and biological processes to clean water; it’s similar to how wetlands, streams and lakes naturally purify water.
RETURN IT
Treated water is safely returned to local waterways, and the organic materials are turned into nutrient-rich fertilizer that supports local agriculture and renewable energy.
