Project overview
The Nine Springs Valley Interceptor (NSVI) Improvements (Phase 2) project consists of replacing outdated interceptor piping.
An interceptor is the largest component of a sewer network. It receives flow from small sewer lines and directs sewage to the nearest Pumping Station, which in this case is Pumping Station 12. The NSVI serves the City of Fitchburg, City of Verona, Town of Verona, City of Madison, City of Middleton and the Town of Middleton. It is one of the District’s largest sewer pipes in the area and is a key component in moving flow to Pump Station 12 and ultimately to the District's Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The current interceptor line was installed in the 1960s and is past its typical life span. When the interceptor was initially installed, it followed the shoreline of Goose Lake. Since then, the water level has risen and the interceptor is now underwater. The manholes that lead to the interceptor had to be raised to stay above the surface and can now be seen standing in Goose Lake. This project looks to replace the existing interceptor with new pipe and move the interceptor out of Goose Lake.
This project is not in a residential area but construction may impact travel along the Military Ridge State Trail. Should any impacts or detours be required, signs will be posted in advance. While some tree removal may be required, the District is working closely with Wisconsin DNR, WisDOT, Dane County, City of Fitchburg and the Town of Verona to minimize impacts to the environment and maintain access for residents.
