about the district

Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District operates and maintains a regional system of large sewer pipes that collect wastewater from 24 customer communities. The individual communities manage their own local sewer systems, which feed into the District’s system.

The District is a municipal corporation, which is a special form of government, and operates as a public utility. It is separate from the City of Madison, which is the District’s largest customer community.

The District is wastewater only. It does not handle drinking water or stormwater.

Please use District, not MMSD, on second reference to avoid confusion with the Madison school district and Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
