Detour near wastewater plant necessary to complete sewer pipe repair

Users of the Capital City Trail segment adjacent to Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District’s Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant should plan for a slightly longer commute for up to five days beginning Monday, Oct. 6.
The District plans to close and detour this segment of the trail starting next Monday to complete a permanent sanitary sewer pipe repair, weather permitting. The trail is expected to reopen by the weekend.
Due to the presence of heavy earth-moving equipment, access to the trail will be entirely restricted. Once in effect, trail users must detour this trail segment via Industrial Drive between South Towne Drive and Nob Hill Road. Detour signs have been posted to provide early warning to trail users.
The trail closure is necessary to complete a permanent repair following a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred in August. The overflow was reported on Friday, Aug. 22, and a temporary repair was completed by midday Saturday, Aug. 23.
The overflow was the result of a crack that formed in a large sewer pipe that runs through a District-owned wetland on the grounds of the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant. The cause of the crack is unknown. Before the repair, the pipe will be televised using a small camera to inspect the condition of the pipe upstream and downstream of the original failure point.
If the repair and detour are delayed due to forecasted weather conditions, a notice will be posted on the District website at madsewer.org by this Friday, Oct. 3.
Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District owns and maintains a regional system of large sewer pipes that collect wastewater from 24 local communities, including Madison. All wastewater is treated at the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant and returned to the environment.
