Process Control System Upgrade/Replacement

PCS Upgrade Project Description

The goal of the PCS Upgrade/Replacement Project is to address obsolescence issues with existing hardware and software, provide enhancements to network reliability and redundancy, and provides a more workable database solution for storing and reporting lab, process, and MetroGro operations data for purposes of billing and process optimization as well as to meet regulatory requirements.

The Process Control System (PCS) at MMSD provides monitoring, control, and data acquisition for plant processes as well as collection system facilities. The PCS is a series of networked process controllers to which input and output wiring from devices is connected. Electrical signals on these wires are monitored by the controllers and programming within them controls outputs to sequence equipment operation to operate District facilities. The hardware controllers also collect data that is forwarded to the Operations Reporting System (ORS) database.

Many of the key components of the system that are being considered for replacement were installed in 1998 during the 9th Addition to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant. MMSD staff relies upon this computer system to assist with the operation and monitoring of process equipment.
